Is it weird to wear leggings in public?
Leggings is a kind of tight pants. Different from ordinary pants, it clearly outlines the buttocks and legs and has a very obvious crotch line. Now it is a must-have item for sports people. Its design inspiration came from dancers at first, then it rose with the maturity of synthetic fiber technology and aerobic exercise in 1980s, and it became popular with yoga in the 21st century.
In the past, people would deliberately choose a slightly longer jacket to cover their hips when wearing leggings. But now, girls just wear it (and jackets) out of the gym. Around the boxing gym, Pilates, gym and hip-hop club in big cities, you can often see girls in leggings.
Leggings is also divided into long and short versions. Recently, the popular short version of “cycling shorts” is cooler and more comfortable.
But is it weird to wear leggings at work?
According to an informal network survey conducted by the American Society for Human Resource Management in 2018, 90% of 9,000 respondents think that “leggings are not suitable for office wear”.
It’s not hard to see that when you feel embarrassed to wear leggings to work, it’s a constraint. But it is also an option if you think it doesn’t matter at all. I agree with a comment in The Cut that leggings are more of a significance than a gift (whether or not to wear leggings to work is more related to your mental state than whether or not to wear it). However, apart from personal choice and workplace regulations, “leggings humiliation” under the social and cultural framework does exist.
People always think that women should not be too sexy in public. How does wearing leggings to work violate interpersonal boundaries? We noticed that some people’s reason is that “women wearing leggings to work will attract men’s attention and distract men”. But the “dress boundary” should not be limited to only one gender. The so-called “dress boundary” should apply to everyone in the environment, not just to a certain group. However, the boundary is not rigid. With the progress of the times and the development of personal needs, the boundary of dress is also changing.
